Jazz In The Neighborhood: Wainapel/jewkes Quartet at Copperfield's Books (san Rafael)

Saxophonists Harvey Wainapel and Noel Jewkes have known and admired each other for more than thirty years but rarely performed together. Their styles of blowing, although quite different from each other, are very compatible, sharing two unifying traits: love and understanding of song forms; and insistence on melody and swing. These talents will be put to good use in the liberating context of a "chordless" quartet – that is, without piano or guitar; the horn players will have great freedom of melodic creation combined with the discipline of clearly presenting the harmonies with just bass and drums as accompaniment, performed by bassist John Wiitala and drummer Bryan Bowman, two of Northern California's most in-demand rhythm section players. The group will explore the "Great American Songbook," a vast body of material that has been revered – and renewed – by musicians for decades.
